Hi, Rockin-B
Congrats for the great homebrew portal for Sega Saturn! Hope SS homebrew community is still alive and kicking.

I have a few crazy ideas that I want to try on Sega Saturn. I have downloaded SaturnOrbit, but I need some advices how to setup a hardware ready for development. I have Sega Saturn V1(not quite sure) but want to be able to execute a "game" (code + content) from the SD card. Could you help with any advice?

Many Thanks,
grakidov

Hi Rockin'-B

Please give us some news
Comment:
Thanks VBT for giving me a little push from time to time. I really wish to continue doing Saturn stuff. Actually, it's the thing that I miss the most, these days.

But I learned to rather speak about things I've done, than to speak about things that I'm planning to do. So the next time you hear from me, it'll be news from the first type.

See you,
Rockin'-B

Rockin'-B, you're missing
Comment:
You're right. I haven't forgot about Saturn. Recent eBay items like Mechwarrior 2, Independence Day, Titan Wars (Saturn) and Tokyo Highway Challenge 1+2 (DC) waiting to be played. Still enjoy Mega Drive Road Rash very much It's time for me to get movin' with Saturn, again!

Hello RockinB. I hope that this message finds you. I want to thank you for all you have done for the Saturn Dev community. I am continuing your tradition of a yearly Saturn Dev contest in your honour. I hope that all is well with you. Take care friend.

Rockin'-B, where did you move ?

VG

Hi, Rockin-B
First I would like to congratulate you for the work that
develops on the sega saturn platform.
I know mp3 players applications for the dreamcast ...
and was wondering if there's any possibility of saturn processors
perform the reproduction of mp3 files via software.
what do you think?

thanks,

Wesley.
Comment:
Hi Wesley, thanks!

I guess a mp3 player would be possible on Saturn. As for homebrew games, it has been easier for us to just preconvert all mp3-audio files to raw CD-DA, PCM or AIF files. Mp3 playback in games would definitely be too heavy on the CPUs, there wouldn't be much CPU time left for graphics and others.

by Henrik from DK on 03/16/2009 10:44
OMG. I love your work... I would pay you to make a nes and genesis emulator for the saturn aswell... could be so awesome... is it impossible to make decent emu for the saturn or what?!
Comment:
VBT created a really impressive fullspeed SMS emulator port. He shows that absolutely great emulation stuff is possible. However, on Saturn the programmer has to struggle with alignment and endianess issues when porting an emulator, simply because they usually have been ported to little-endian platforms. The memory and bandwidth restrictions as well as the fact that there are two cpus (emulators are rarely written multi-threaded) require a lot of work and time to get the max out of it.

The SNES emu already is the fasted in my portfolio (strange, eh?), I expect that it could be speed-up to being playable (not necessarily fullspeed). All of the emus could be speed-up significantly with hardware-accelerated gfx drawing. I'm sure that somewhere in the far future, we will see all those things happen, even a genesis emu. By nature, the genesis emu will be far slower than the snes emu. No one could aford to make a dynarec genesis emu for Saturn....

This site is great. I had no idea there was so much homebrew for sega saturn. I'll explore more during the week.

I'm making an art project using animations on the VMU, will email allot a people that are into VMu programing as soon as I'm done, to know what they think.

great job

Hi, erstmal eins vorweg: Super Seite!

Hey,
I saw that you used some of my icons in the GBAX compo and on your site. Well you were nice enough to ask and I love your work.
Cool to see someone programming for the Saturn! and Dreamcast.

Please check out http://www.armchairarcade.com if you have the time. I posted some news item on it a while back mentioning your emulators for the Saturn!

Perhaps I could design some custom graphics for you...
Comment:
Thanks!

I did have a look on your site.
This magazine and the community is awesome.

About the custom graphics, what have you thought of?
I'd need some splash screens or logos from time to time.
If I start a new game from scratch, I might need other GFX, too.

I not that experience in DOS. at the
segaxtreme website they have many
saturn development tools but most of
the ones I like to use are in DOS.
can you help me on how to use DOS
programs?
I want to be an saturn programer too
but I'm use to gui enviroments like
gmax (base on 3ds max) and anior8.
I never compiled or assembly a source
program in my life yet.
All this set path and stuff for dos
WHAT UP WITH THAT !!

by andrew on 03/31/2005 02:24
I was wonder do you know of any ways to work the sega saturn sgl compiler?
In your readme file ,with your game program, you wrote about weird workarounds you use to use It,I assume that you found a way to work around the compiler's flaws.
So how about it, can you share your secret of how to used the sgl compiler?
I don't feel like paying $39 to get gnush unless i really have to.

Comment:
There isn't much difference in using the old GCC compiler and the new KPIT GNUSH one. Only environment variable paths have to be adjusted and the KPIT tools are named sh-coff-gcc or sh-coff-objcpy.

Don't even think about using the old compiler, it's error prone and will slow down your progress.
Head over to http://www.kpitgnutools.com and download the FREE KPIT GNU Tools v0501(COFF version!). You only have to register.

If you got any other questions, don't hesitate asking me at

great work, you are a super coder! not many people try to code for saturn, and a few have decent results, and you finally made all of this emus! thnks to share to all people, and thnks to show to many people that the saturn coding its difficult but possible!

Thanks for these great ports!!!!!!
I have spent 1 day trying it and works fine.

Only say that wonderswan emulator file are corrupted

Comment:
Thanks for the hint, the download is fixed.
You should really try Wonder Snake 2!

by Cygnus on 02/02/2005 08:51
Great work on those emus !!!

For Atari Lynx emulation you may consider MESS instead of Handy.

Both emus were ported to the Dreamcast. The Handy port is extreeeeemely slow, but the MESS port is playable.

Sure, Handy is the better emulator but needs more resources. A MESS port may reach playable speed on the Saturn.
Comment:
Yes, I already got the MESS source code. Did not know ebout it's performance, only that it has worse compatibility. Maybe I will give it a try...

by Terry Bogard from Dominican Republic on 02/02/2005 04:21
man what you have done it's a miracle, at last someone put it's eyes on emulation developent ported to Saturn a console that not much people have interest in, im really impress, no matter if the emus are slow, they are there so far, congratz man!..

by squall38 from Germany on 02/01/2005 22:25
I just tried your GNUBoy Saturn port, very impressive! Even if it's slow, it played most of the demos I tried decently; was fun tinkering around w/ it.

Keep up the awesome work!
